Grim Tutor is a straightforward unconditional tutor: for three mana, you search your library for any card, put it into your hand, then lose 3 life. There are no restrictions on what you can find, so it can grab a land when you’re desperate, a removal spell when you’re behind, or the final combo piece when you’re ready to win.
The tradeoff is efficiency. Three mana plus 3 life makes Grim Tutor noticeably more expensive than the very best black tutors, but the ability to find literally whatever card you need is still extremely powerful. In Commander especially, the life payment is often a relatively minor price for dramatically improving your deck’s consistency. It works best in decks where finding one particular card at the right moment is worth spending most or all of your mana for the turn.
