Skullclamp turns expendable creatures into a steady source of cards. It costs one mana to cast and one to equip, then draws two cards whenever the equipped creature dies. Token decks, sacrifice strategies, and creature-heavy Commander builds can use it to keep their hands supplied after committing resources to the board.
The equipment’s +1/-1 bonus is central to the plan. Attaching it to an ordinary 1/1 makes that creature a 2/0, causing it to die and trigger the draw immediately. A supply of one-toughness creatures can therefore convert each equip payment into two cards. Check any effects that increase toughness, since an anthem may keep a token alive instead of letting it die to the equipment.
Chatterfang, Squirrel General is a natural partner because its extra Squirrels provide more small bodies to equip. Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat can add life swings when those creatures die. For equipped creatures with enough toughness to survive, Ashnod’s Altar supplies a sacrifice outlet that produces mana and causes Skullclamp’s draw trigger. These pieces help a sacrifice deck turn its creatures into several useful resources.
Equip normally works only during your main phase while the stack is empty, so Skullclamp is not something you can freely move in response to a sweeper. It also needs creatures and a way for them to die; the equipment alone does not generate cards. Its best home consistently creates bodies it can afford to lose and has productive uses for the new cards it draws.
