Alchemy is another digital-only format on MTG Arena. It builds on Standard’s foundation but features rebalanced cards and exclusive digital cards that don’t appear in paper Magic. This approach lets Wizards of the Coast make quick changes. If a card is too strong, they can adjust its stats or abilities. Alchemy also introduces new mechanics that work only in a digital environment, such as random card generation or conjuring cards into your hand.
The rules for Alchemy mostly follow Standard. You use the same sets that are currently in Standard. However, you can also include the Alchemy-specific cards. Cards that get rebalanced in Alchemy have different text or costs compared to their paper versions. This means you might see a card do something in Alchemy that it doesn’t do in Standard. Wizards can update these cards at any time, which keeps the meta moving.
Alchemy’s popularity is varied. Some players like the constant changes. They enjoy a format that doesn’t get stale because overpowered decks can be toned down quickly. Others don’t like that their cards might change. If you crafted a powerful mythic rare only to see it nerfed a week later, that can be frustrating. The digital-only nature also means you can’t play the exact same decks in paper.
But Alchemy can be fun if you enjoy experimentation. New card releases drop frequently. Digital mechanics add surprises to games. You might see random spells appear or new tokens that don’t exist on a real tabletop. This can create unique experiences. Alchemy also tries to keep power levels in check, so no single deck dominates for too long.
If you like the idea of a format that’s updated on the fly, Alchemy might be interesting. It’s not for everyone, but it brings a video game twist to Magic’s gameplay.
