Massacre Wurm punishes opposing creature boards in two connected ways. Its entry ability gives opponents’ creatures -2/-2 for the turn, and its continuing death trigger makes an opponent lose two life whenever one of their creatures dies. A board of small tokens can therefore disappear while its controller takes a substantial hit to their life total.
Reanimate and Animate Dead can bring the Wurm onto the battlefield without paying its full six-mana casting cost. The entry ability happens either way, making it a useful reanimation target when the table has developed many small creatures. Blink or bounce-and-recast effects can also reuse the toughness reduction when the deck has the colors and resources to support them.
The death trigger continues to matter after the entry turn. Targeted removal, combat trades, or a later sweeper can cause additional life loss as opposing creatures die. Your creatures do not receive the initial -2/-2, so a sacrifice or creature-value deck can maintain its own board while disrupting smaller creatures across the table.
Larger creatures may survive the entry effect, and the triple-black casting requirement is demanding without reanimation or strong fixing. Reducing toughness to zero can remove an indestructible creature, but only if the reduction is sufficient. Exiling a creature does not count as it dying, so exile-based removal will not produce the same payoff. Massacre Wurm fits best when creature tokens and low-toughness engines are common enough for its entry to matter immediately, with recursion available to reuse the effect later.
