Giver of Runes makes a single untapped white creature a meaningful obstacle to targeted removal. Tapping her gives another creature you control protection from a chosen color or from colorless until end of turn. That can save a commander, preserve a combo creature, or help an attacker get past blockers sharing the chosen characteristic.
The word another matters: Giver cannot protect herself with her own ability. She also normally needs to survive a turn before activating unless she gains haste. Deploying her before the creature you intend to protect can therefore be more reliable than casting both together and assuming the defense is already available.
Protection does several jobs. It prevents damage from the relevant sources, stops targeting, prevents blocking by creatures of that characteristic, and affects attachments. That last part can remove your own Auras or Equipment if they match the protection granted. Protection from colorless is useful against colorless removal, but can also make attached colorless Equipment fall off. It does not stop an untargeted destroy effect or a sacrifice instruction. Choose the protection based on the actual spell, damage source, or blocker involved. Giver earns her slot when a particular creature is important enough to defend repeatedly, while still offering offensive utility on a turn when the safest route is helping that creature connect with a player instead.
