Damning Verdict gives white counter decks a board wipe that can preserve much of their own development. It destroys every creature with no counters on it, leaving creatures with counters untouched by the destruction instruction. A deck that distributes +1/+1 counters naturally can use it to clear blockers and threats while keeping a developed army ready for the next attack.

Cathars' Crusade can place counters across your board, while Heliod, Sun-Crowned and other targeted counter engines can prepare important creatures individually. Keyword counters and other counter types also qualify; the spell does not require the counters to be +1/+1 counters specifically. That makes it useful in decks where several different mechanics leave counters on creatures.

Opposing creatures with counters survive as well. An opponent's planeswalker that has become a creature, a creature with a shield counter, or a counter-focused army may remain largely intact. Your own unprepared utility creatures are destroyed, so inspect the actual board instead of assuming that a counter theme guarantees a one-sided result.

The five-mana cost is worthwhile when the surviving creatures give you a meaningful advantage. Sometimes placing a counter on a key creature before casting the Verdict is better than adding another threat to the board. Keep a more general answer available for matchups where opponents also use counters, and treat Verdict as a sweeper chosen for its fit with your strategy rather than universal creature removal.
