Phyrexian Altar gives creature decks a sacrifice outlet that also fixes mana. Sacrificing a creature produces one mana of any color, with no tap requirement on the artifact. That makes it useful in aristocrats, reanimation, and token decks that want to sacrifice creatures repeatedly while paying colored costs for their next spells or abilities.
Gravecrawler provides a clear combo example. With Phyrexian Altar, Gravecrawler, and another Zombie such as Carrion Feeder on the battlefield, sacrifice Gravecrawler for black mana. Because you still control another Zombie, you can spend that mana to cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard, then repeat. The sequence produces repeated casts and deaths without generating spare mana by itself. Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat supplies a payoff that can drain opponents through those repeated deaths.
Outside a loop, the Altar can turn Avenger of Zendikar’s Plant tokens into the colored mana needed for interaction or a follow-up threat. It also lets you sacrifice a creature in response to targeted exile or theft, provided sacrificing it is the better outcome. Death triggers and recursion effects help recover value from those decisions.
Compared with Ashnod’s Altar, Phyrexian Altar produces less mana per creature but offers colored mana, which is often what makes a recursion sequence work. It does little without creatures to sacrifice, and spending your entire board can leave you exposed if the payoff is answered. Build around reliable token production or repeatable creature access so the artifact supports a durable engine rather than consuming resources you cannot replace.
