Animate Dead gives black decks a two-mana way to return a creature from any graveyard to the battlefield under their control. It works as an Aura tied to the creature it returns, making it useful both for dedicated reanimation and for recovering value from creatures that died during normal play.
Entomb can set up the exact target you want by putting a creature from your library into the graveyard. Archon of Cruelty provides a large entry payoff, while Eternal Witness offers a smaller value play that recovers another card. Unlike Reanimate, Animate Dead does not make you lose life equal to the creature’s mana value, which can matter when returning expensive threats.
The enchantment introduces its own vulnerabilities. The returned creature gets -1/-0, and if Animate Dead leaves the battlefield, that creature’s controller sacrifices it. Removing the Aura can therefore answer a creature that would otherwise be difficult to destroy. If the Aura is removed before its initial return trigger resolves, the creature will not return at all.
Choose targets and timing with graveyard interaction in mind, since opponents can respond to the spell or its trigger. Enchantment recursion and creature-entry payoffs can support repeated use, but a large creature still needs an opportunity to attack unless it has haste. Animate Dead is most useful when the creature’s entry abilities or continued presence justify the investment, and your deck can exploit the enchantment-based approach without assuming the returned creature is independent of the Aura holding it in play.
