Card rulings 7
  1. A card with Phyrexian mana symbols in its mana cost is each color that appears in that mana cost, regardless of how that cost may have been paid.
  2. To calculate the mana value of a card with Phyrexian mana symbols in its cost, count each Phyrexian mana symbol as 1.
  3. As you cast a spell or activate an activated ability with one or more Phyrexian mana symbols in its cost, you choose how to pay for each Phyrexian mana symbol at the same time you would choose modes or choose a value for X.
  4. If you're at 1 life or less, you can't pay 2 life.
  5. Phyrexian mana is not a new color. Players can't produce Phyrexian mana.
  6. If a spell has X mana in its mana cost, X is considered to be the value chosen for it while that spell is on the stack.
  7. Each Phyrexian mana symbol in a spell's mana cost contributes 1 to that spell's mana value. For example, Mental Misstep's mana value is 1, regardless of how its cost was paid.

Updated

Mental Misstep counters a spell with mana value exactly one. Its Phyrexian blue cost can be paid with blue mana or two life, allowing a deck to contest an important early spell while its lands are tapped. The restriction concerns mana value rather than the amount of mana the opponent actually spent.

Sol Ring, Swords to Plowshares, and a one-mana tutor are examples of targets that can justify the exchange. A cost reduction does not make a two-mana spell eligible, and a spell cast for an alternative payment still uses its normal mana-value rules. Misstep is a focused answer, so keep broader interaction for the creatures and engines that fall outside its narrow coverage.

Choose interaction around the threat it actually addresses. Targeted removal, destruction, exile, and abilities on the stack require different answers, so no single protection slot covers every exchange. Leave the relevant mana available before committing to a threat, and identify whether the important resource is one creature, an entire board, or the spell that must resolve during the current turn.

One-mana interaction often matters during the opening turns and again during a combo exchange. Paying life preserves mana for another response, but it still spends a card. Save Misstep for a spell whose resolution materially changes the turn rather than using it automatically on the first eligible target that appears.
