The Great Henge turns a large creature into access to a mana and card-advantage engine. Its nine-mana cost is reduced by the greatest power among creatures you control, making it a natural fit for green Commander decks that develop substantial creatures before committing supporting artifacts.
The reduction affects the seven generic mana in its cost, so you still need two green mana even with a very large creature. Ghalta, Primal Hunger can reduce that generic portion completely, while smaller threats provide a partial discount. Once Henge resolves, it can tap for two green mana and gain you two life, helping fund the next play immediately.
Its ongoing reward comes from nontoken creatures entering under your control: each qualifying entry adds a +1/+1 counter to that creature and draws a card. Beast Whisperer complements this by drawing when you cast a creature, allowing the two engines to reward different moments in the sequence. A creature returned from the graveyard can trigger Henge without being cast, while a creature spell that gets countered can still have triggered Whisperer.
Avenger of Zendikar illustrates the nontoken restriction. Avenger itself can trigger Henge, but the Plant tokens it creates do not. A deck relying mainly on tokens may therefore draw fewer cards from Henge than expected. Keep enough nontoken creatures and early power to support both its discount and its engine. The card is strongest when the creatures you already want to play make it cheaper and then keep turning later entries into fresh resources.
