Card rulings 4
  1. Because a spell with overload doesn't target when its overload cost is paid, it may affect permanents with hexproof or with protection from the appropriate color.
  2. If you are instructed to cast a spell with overload "without paying its mana cost," you can't choose to pay its overload cost instead.
  3. To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost you're paying (such as an overload cost), add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The mana value of the spell remains unchanged, no matter what the total cost to cast it was.
  4. If you don't pay the overload cost of a spell with overload, that spell will have a single target. If you pay the overload cost, the spell won't have any targets.

Updated

Vandalblast gives red decks artifact removal that scales with the board. For one red mana, it destroys a single artifact you do not control. Paying its five-mana overload cost changes the effect to destroy every artifact you do not control, letting you clear opposing mana rocks, Equipment, and artifact engines while preserving your own.

The inexpensive mode can answer an early Sol Ring, a dangerous sacrifice outlet, or a key piece such as Aetherflux Reservoir before it starts taking over. The overloaded mode is useful when several opponents have developed Treasures, mana rocks, and utility artifacts. A red artifact deck can gain a particularly large advantage because its own board remains intact.

Overloading removes targeting from the spell. That allows the sweep to affect opposing artifacts with hexproof, although indestructible artifacts still survive destruction. It also changes the mana investment substantially, so decide whether one immediate target deserves the cheap answer or whether the board is likely to justify saving the card for a broader reset.

Vandalblast is a sorcery, which limits its use against a combo assembled during another player’s turn. It also cannot destroy your own artifact, even if doing so would trigger a useful death ability. Pair it with instant-speed interaction when the deck needs to stop an artifact activation at a critical moment. The card is strongest when its two modes provide useful choices at different stages rather than encouraging you to wait for a perfect sweep while an immediate threat goes unanswered.
