Card rulings 5
  1. Vesuva copies exactly what is printed on the land it's copying and nothing else (unless it's copying a land that's copying something else; see below). It doesn't copy whether a land is tapped or untapped, whether it has any counters on it or Auras attached to it, or any non-copy effects that changed its types, and so on.
  2. If the copied land is copying something else, Vesuva uses the copiable values of that land. In most cases, Vesuva will be a copy of whatever that land is copying.
  3. Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied land will trigger if Vesuva is entering the battlefield. Any "As [this land] enters the battlefield" or "[This land] enters the battlefield with" abilities of the copied land will also work.
  4. If Vesuva somehow enters the battlefield at the same time as another land, Vesuva can't become a copy of that land. You may choose only a land that's already on the battlefield.
  5. If you don't choose a land on the battlefield, Vesuva enters the battlefield untapped as itself, and will not be able to tap for mana.

Updated

Vesuva gives a mana base access to a copy of any land already on the battlefield. It can copy your own utility land or an opponent's useful land, entering tapped as the selected land. That flexibility makes it appealing in decks with powerful land abilities, while the tapped entry means it usually serves future turns rather than supplying immediate mana.

In a black land engine, copying Cabal Coffers can create another source of large mana production once enough Swamps are available. Colorless decks may use it to copy an Urza land or another valuable utility land. Because it copies the land's characteristics, it can also copy basic land types and relevant entry abilities rather than merely the land's printed mana output.

The legend rule matters when copying a legendary land you already control. Unless another effect changes that rule, you normally cannot keep both same-named legendary permanents. Copying a nonlegendary engine is often the cleaner route. The chosen land must already be on the battlefield when Vesuva enters, so it cannot copy another land entering at exactly the same time.

Consider the floor as well as the best target. An opening hand with Vesuva may have fewer immediately usable mana sources than it appears, especially when no suitable land is available yet. It works best when the deck has enough reliable early lands and enough valuable later targets to make a tapped copy worth a dedicated slot.
