Updated

Vanquish the Horde becomes cheaper as the battlefield fills with creatures, making it a powerful catch-up spell for white decks. Its printed cost is eight mana, but each creature on the battlefield reduces the generic portion by one. With six or more creatures present, it can cost just two white mana, leaving room to rebuild or hold up another spell after the reset.

The reduction counts creatures controlled by every player, including your own. Multiplayer token boards can therefore make it inexpensive very quickly. White control decks appreciate the efficiency, while midrange decks can use it when an opponent's wider army has overtaken their own development. It destroys all creatures rather than choosing only opposing creatures, so your board is part of the cost.

Noncreature engines help you benefit after the wipe. A planeswalker such as Elspeth, Sun's Champion can create new creatures, and an enchantment-based draw or mana engine can keep generating resources. Indestructible protection can also preserve selected creatures, though those creatures need to have protection at the time the spell resolves.

Count creatures before committing to the cast, particularly if removal or sacrifice effects may change the board beforehand. Once the spell is cast and its cost paid, later changes do not retroactively alter that payment. The card fits best when your games regularly develop substantial creature boards and you want a sweeper that can leave mana available for the next step.
