Sunbaked Canyon can be early fixing or a later card, which makes it useful for red-white decks that spend their hands quickly. It produces either color at the cost of one life. When another land is worth less than fresh action, one mana, a tap, and sacrificing the Canyon draws a card instead.
Aggressive and Equipment decks can use the early mana to develop threats and support pieces, then cash in the land after their essential costs are covered. The draw is available at instant speed, letting you wait until an opponent's end step after deciding whether your mana is still needed. It can also be an appropriate sacrifice when another effect already threatens to remove the land and the timing allows a response.
Crucible of Worlds can make the sacrificed Canyon available to play again, while a deck with green can use Life from the Loam to recover it to hand. Those interactions still consume land plays and mana, so they are a resource engine rather than free cards. Repeated life payments also matter when the deck lacks a comfortable life cushion. Do not sacrifice a needed color source merely because one mana is available; compare the next card with the spells the remaining lands can actually cast. The strongest use is a deliberate transition from early mana development to finding the threat or answer that moves the game forward.
