Strix Serenade gives blue decks a one-mana answer to an artifact, creature, or planeswalker spell. In exchange, that spell's controller receives a 2/2 flying Bird token. The low cost makes it easy to hold up while developing your own board, and the broad permanent categories cover many threats that could otherwise demand a more expensive answer after resolving.
Artifact engines and powerful creature-entry effects are appealing targets because countering the spell prevents the permanent from entering at all. Answering a Portal to Phyrexia before its entry trigger exists can be far more valuable than removing it afterward. The Bird is a real resource, but it is often a manageable exchange for stopping a much larger engine or finishing piece.
The spell does not target instants, sorceries, or ordinary enchantment spells. A control deck still needs other interaction for those categories, and an artifact or creature spell that cannot be countered is not stopped by the counter instruction. Read the target's full characteristics rather than relying only on its theme or what it is expected to do after resolving.
Consider the token's impact when choosing a target. A player with Equipment, sacrifice outlets, or token synergies may use the Bird effectively, while a nearly empty board may find even a 2/2 flyer useful. Strix Serenade earns its slot when the mana efficiency and ability to stop a key permanent outweigh the small creature granted in return.
