Smothering Tithe is a rare enchantment from Magic: The Gathering‘s Double Masters 2022 set. It costs {3}{W} and has the following ability:
- Whenever an opponent draws a card, that player may pay
{2}. If the player doesn’t, you create a Treasure token. (It’s an artifact with “{T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.“)
This enchantment allows you to generate Treasure tokens whenever your opponents draw cards and choose not to pay the mana cost, providing significant mana acceleration, especially in multiplayer formats where opponents draw multiple cards over the course of the game.
Tip:
Include Smothering Tithe in decks that can capitalize on the extra mana provided by Treasure tokens. Its ability to generate mana resources as opponents draw cards can accelerate your game plan and enable powerful plays ahead of curve. Pair it with cards that force opponents to draw additional cards, increasing the likelihood of accumulating Treasure tokens. Be mindful of opponents who may prioritize paying the {2} to prevent you from gaining Treasures; however, this can still disrupt their mana development.

Forces all players to discard their hands and draw seven cards, triggering Smothering Tithe multiple times and potentially generating a substantial number of Treasure tokens.
Windfall
Each player discards their hand and draws cards equal to the greatest number a player discarded, leading to multiple Smothering Tithe triggers and Treasure generation.
Teferi’s Puzzle Box
At the beginning of each player’s draw step, they put their hand on the bottom of their library and draw that many cards, ensuring consistent Smothering Tithe triggers each turn.
Notion Thief
While Notion Thief is on the battlefield, if an opponent would draw a card except the first one they draw in each of their draw steps, you draw instead, allowing you to benefit from both the card draw and Smothering Tithe’s Treasure generation.
