Card rulings 6
  1. For spells with X mana in their mana costs, use the value chosen for X to determine the spell's mana value.
  2. Triggered abilities from cycling a card and the cycling ability itself aren't spells. Effects that interact with spells (such as that of Cancel) won't affect them.
  3. An ability that triggers when a player casts a spell resolves before the spell that caused it to trigger. It resolves even if that spell is countered.
  4. You can cycle a card even if it has a triggered ability from cycling that won't have a legal target. This is because the cycling ability and the triggered ability are separate. This also means that if either ability is countered (with Disallow, for example), the other ability will still resolve.
  5. Some cards with cycling have an ability that triggers when you cycle them, and some cards have an ability that triggers whenever you cycle any card. These triggered abilities resolve before you draw from the cycling ability.
  6. You can choose 0 as the value of X in Shark Typhoon's cycling cost. The last ability will trigger, and you'll create a 0/0 blue Shark creature token with flying. Unless something else is raising its toughness, the Shark will then immediately die.

Updated

Shark Typhoon is two different plans in one card. Casting the enchantment commits six mana to a continuing engine: every noncreature spell you cast creates a flying Shark with power and toughness equal to that spell's mana value. Cycling it instead draws a card and creates one Shark sized by the X you paid, offering a flexible play without establishing the enchantment.

Control decks often appreciate the cycling mode because it can produce a blocker or end-step attacker while replacing the card. Cycling is an activated ability, and the Shark comes from a separate triggered ability, so a conventional spell counter such as Counterspell cannot target either one. Cards that interact with abilities can still matter, and the resulting token can be removed normally.

The enchantment mode has a higher ceiling when your deck expects to cast several noncreature spells. A draw spell, counterspell, or planeswalker can add an evasive body while advancing its original purpose. Mana value determines token size even if a cost reduction made the spell cheaper to cast.

Choose the mode based on the available window. Cycling for a modest Shark may preserve your position now; committing to the enchantment may be better when the board is stable and your hand can immediately supply follow-up spells. There is no requirement to save the card for its most expensive use. Its strength is letting the same draw become an answer to pressure, a threat during a quiet end step, or a recurring army in a longer game.
