Ruby Medallion reduces the generic mana required to cast your red spells by one. It is particularly useful in red decks that plan to cast several spells in a turn, because every qualifying cast receives the discount without requiring the artifact to tap. That can make a sequence of draw, recursion, and payoff spells easier to assemble.
Wheel of Fortune can cost one generic and one red instead of three mana, while Underworld Breach can cost a single red. Past in Flames also benefits when you cast it, and discounted red spells replayed through a graveyard engine can extend the same turn. The savings become most noticeable when several spells contain a generic component.
Storm-Kiln Artist provides a complementary resource engine by creating Treasures from casting or copying instants and sorceries. Aetherflux Reservoir can reward the growing number of casts with life gain. Medallion does not supply those payoffs itself, but it makes each step consume less of the mana available for the sequence.
The discount never removes a required red symbol. Gamble and Lightning Bolt still cost one red, and nonred artifacts or activated abilities do not receive a reduction. Copies placed directly on the stack also do not need a casting discount because they were not cast in the first place. Evaluate the actual costs in your list before treating Medallion as a universal accelerator. It belongs in decks where repeated red casts with generic costs are a regular part of the plan.
