Ponder helps a blue deck find the next card it needs without increasing the cost of its early turns very much. It looks at the top three cards of your library, lets you arrange them, and then gives you the option to shuffle before drawing a card. That makes it useful for finding land drops, interaction, or a missing part of a planned sequence.
Its built-in shuffle is valuable when all three cards are poor draws. If the group contains one useful card and two you would rather avoid, you can draw the useful one and later use a fetch land such as Polluted Delta to shuffle away the remaining pair. The right choice depends on whether those future draws help the hand you already have.
Top-deck engines such as Bolas’s Citadel can use Ponder to arrange upcoming spells before continuing a sequence. Talrand, Sky Summoner rewards casting the sorcery with a Drake, while Aetherflux Reservoir can count it as another cast during a larger turn. These interactions add value to a card that is already helping the deck choose its next draw.
Ponder is a sorcery and generally leaves your hand size unchanged after accounting for the card spent to cast it. It is selection rather than a sustained draw engine. You also finish its instructions before taking another action, so you cannot activate a fetch land between arranging the three cards and drawing. Use it with a specific need in mind and consider both the immediate draw and the cards it leaves for later turns.
