Its larger activation costs two mana and taps the land, then produces mana of a chosen color equal to your devotion to that color.
Devotion counts colored mana symbols in the mana costs of permanents you control. A green creature deck can build it naturally with cards such as Selvala, Heart of the Wilds and The Great Henge. In black, Bolas’s Citadel contributes three black symbols while Sheoldred, the Apocalypse contributes two, giving those two permanents a combined black devotion of five.
Deserted Temple can untap Nykthos for another activation, provided the output is large enough to justify both Temple’s cost and the next Nykthos activation. A deck with expensive creatures or scalable plays such as Finale of Devastation has useful ways to spend the resulting mana. These are board-dependent interactions, so the strength of the land rises and falls with the permanents supporting it.
Nykthos also has a normal colorless-mana ability for turns when the devotion activation is not worthwhile. Lands are generally colorless and do not contribute devotion simply because they produce colored mana, while many tokens have no mana cost to count. A sweeper can sharply reduce the land’s output. Include Nykthos when your deck naturally accumulates colored symbols and has uses for a large burst, while retaining enough ordinary colored sources to function before that board develops.
