Updated

Lotus Petal trades a card for a single burst of mana in any color. It costs zero to cast, then taps and sacrifices itself to produce the chosen color, making it useful when one additional mana changes the timing of a key spell or fixes an otherwise awkward opening hand.

Unlike a reusable mana rock, Petal does not support every later turn after you activate it. Its value is immediate: help cast an early engine, supply a missing colored symbol, or preserve a land’s mana for another spell in the same sequence. Decks built around speed and compact combos can make better use of that temporary advantage than decks planning a slow resource game.

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy adds another mana of the type Petal produced when you activate it, increasing the return from sacrificing the artifact. Muldrotha, the Gravetide offers a different partnership by allowing Petal to be cast from the graveyard as your artifact permanent spell for the turn. Petal’s zero casting cost makes that a convenient way to convert Muldrotha’s permission into additional mana.

Artifact and spell-count payoffs can also reward casting Petal before it is sacrificed. Aetherflux Reservoir, for example, can gain life from the cast as part of a larger sequence. Those benefits still require supporting cards. Include Petal when its speed or artifact interactions have a clear purpose, and avoid treating it as a replacement for enough lands and lasting mana sources to keep the deck functioning after the opening burst.
