Ledger Shredder turns busy turns into card selection and a growing flying threat. Whenever a player casts their second spell in a turn, the Bird connives: you draw a card, discard a card, and place a +1/+1 counter on it if the discarded card is not a land. Because it watches every player, a multiplayer game can provide several opportunities across a turn cycle.
Cheap cantrips and interaction help you trigger it yourself without abandoning your normal plan. Ponder followed by a one-mana spell can improve your hand while growing the Shredder if you discard a nonland card. Graveyard decks also appreciate putting selected cards into the graveyard, whether to support reanimation, flashback, or another recursion engine.
Connive is filtering rather than straightforward card advantage: you draw and then discard, keeping the same number of cards unless another effect changes the exchange. The quality of those cards can still improve substantially. Discarding a land may be correct even though it does not add a counter, especially when your hand already contains more mana sources than you need.
Only the second spell a player casts that turn triggers the ability for that player; their third and fourth spells do not keep retriggering it. Plan your own sequence around that threshold, and avoid spending a weak extra spell solely for a counter when waiting would preserve better interaction. The Shredder fits decks that naturally cast multiple efficient spells and value a flexible discard outlet.
