Grim Tutor gives black decks access to any card in the library for three mana and three life. The unrestricted search makes it a flexible bridge between your deck's setup and the card that best solves the current situation. It can find a land, an answer, a draw engine, or a finishing piece rather than asking you to commit to one category in advance.
Combo decks can use the Tutor to find a missing component such as an altar or a payoff, while black control decks may prefer a board wipe when the battlefield is getting away from them. In a Cabal Coffers strategy, finding Coffers or Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth can improve future turns more than selecting an expensive spell you cannot yet cast.
The three-mana cost affects sequencing. If the searched card must be cast immediately, budget for both spells rather than evaluating the Tutor in isolation. Finding a cheap answer can be more practical than finding the strongest card in your deck when only a little mana remains. The life loss also matters when you are already paying life for card draw or other abilities.
Use the search to improve the actual position, not simply to follow a fixed script. A protection spell before a planned combo turn, or a recovery card after disruption, may be the correct choice. Grim Tutor rewards decks with a range of efficient tools and a clear understanding of what each one is meant to accomplish.
