Expedition Map searches for any land card, giving decks access to utility lands that ordinary basic-land ramp cannot find. After casting the artifact, pay two mana, tap it, and sacrifice it to reveal a chosen land and put it into your hand. The search does not put the land directly onto the battlefield or grant an additional land play.
Cabal Coffers, Urza’s Saga, and Field of the Dead are possible targets when they fit the deck’s colors and plan. Map itself can be found by Urza’s Saga’s final chapter because its printed cost is one generic mana. Think about the full sequence: finding a powerful land is useful only if its requirements and your remaining land play let it contribute.
Land recursion can extend the usefulness of a land-based resource package. Crucible of Worlds permits land plays from the graveyard, while a deck with green can use Life from the Loam to recover several lands to hand. Neither effect supplies unlimited land plays, so repeated use must still fit the turn’s available land allowance and the mana needed for the rest of the sequence.
Map’s search can be activated at instant speed once the artifact is available and you can pay. That can preserve a choice until the relevant threat is clearer. The land normally still waits for your next legal land play, so a search for a defensive land is not automatically an immediate battlefield answer.
