What Doctor Doom Does
When Doctor Doom enters, he creates two 3/3 colorless Robot Villain artifact creature tokens named Doombot. That means his six-mana investment immediately provides three bodies and nine total power across the battlefield.
Doom also has indestructible as long as you control an artifact creature or a Plan. His Doombots conveniently satisfy the artifact-creature requirement themselves, making Doom difficult to remove unless opponents first deal with his supporting board. At the beginning of your end step, he also draws you a card at the cost of one life.
Best Uses for Doctor Doom
- Villain decks: Doom naturally supports the Villain theme introduced throughout Marvel Super Heroes.
- Artifact strategies: His Doombots are artifact creatures and help keep Doom indestructible.
- Token decks: Creating two substantial creature tokens from a single card gives token-focused decks multiple bodies to exploit.
- Black value decks: The additional card every end step gives Doom long-term value if he remains on the battlefield.
Recommended Interactions
- Doom Reigns Supreme: Plans directly interact with Doctor Doom’s protection while supporting the wider Doom and Villain strategy.
- Skullclamp: Gives artifact-token strategies another way to convert disposable creatures into cards.
- Black Market Connections: Adds additional resources and creatures while fitting naturally into a black value shell.
- Kindred Dominance: Particularly attractive in heavily tribal Villain builds that want to preserve their own board.
Strengths and Considerations
Doctor Doom’s main strength is how much material one card puts onto the battlefield. You get Doom, two Doombots, a conditional source of indestructibility, and recurring card draw from the same spell.
The primary consideration is his six-mana cost. He is not subtle, cheap, or particularly interested in arriving early. Decks that can ramp into Doom or repeatedly take advantage of his enter-the-battlefield ability are positioned to get considerably more from him.
