Demonic Tutor turns a card in your hand into whichever card your current situation requires. For two mana, it searches your library and puts the chosen card directly into your hand, making it useful in black Commander decks built around flexible answers, specific engines, or compact combos.
The strongest target is not always a win condition. Toxic Deluge can stabilize a crowded battlefield, Ancient Tomb can help fund a later turn, and a draw engine can rebuild a depleted hand. Unlike top-of-library tutors, Demonic Tutor does not require a separate draw before you can access the card you found. You still need the mana and timing to use it.
In a blue-black combo deck, it can find either Thassa’s Oracle or Demonic Consultation. One established sequence is to cast Oracle, then cast Consultation while Oracle’s entry trigger is waiting to resolve, naming a card absent from your deck. Consultation exiles your library, allowing Oracle’s trigger to meet its win condition. The pieces and their abilities can still be disrupted, so searching is only part of setting up that line.
For slower decks, the same flexibility supports a toolbox of removal and value cards without committing to a dedicated combo. Think about the whole turn before choosing a target: spending two mana to search can delay the answer you actually need. Demonic Tutor is at its best when your deck offers several purposeful targets and you can identify which one changes the present game.
