Card rulings 3
  1. If no card is exiled with this artifact, it can’t add mana. The same is true if the exiled card is colorless.
  2. This artifact's activated ability can never add Colorless mana, even if the exiled card is colorless or has a colorless mana symbol in its mana cost.
  3. If the exiled card is multicolored, you choose one of that card’s colors each time you tap this artifact for mana.

Updated

Chrome Mox trades a card in your hand for faster access to colored mana. It costs zero to cast, but its imprint ability needs you to exile a nonartifact, nonland card from your hand if you want the Mox’s own mana ability to function.

The mana available depends on the exiled card’s colors. Imprinting a blue card lets the Mox produce blue, while a multicolored card gives you a choice among those colors each time you activate it. This uses the card’s actual colors, not every color mentioned in its rules text or color identity. A colorless imprinted card does not let the Mox produce colorless mana.

Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy rewards the acceleration by adding another mana of the type Chrome Mox produced. Urza, Lord High Artificer offers a different interaction: his ability can tap an untapped Chrome Mox for blue mana even if no card was imprinted, because that mana comes from Urza’s ability. These partners make the artifact useful within a wider mana engine.

The card tradeoff matters. Casting Chrome Mox and exiling another card uses two cards from your hand to establish one mana source, so it fits decks that value speed and can replenish their resources. A slower deck may prefer a conventional two-mana rock that does not require an extra card. Compare it with Mox Diamond, which requires discarding a land instead. Choose the acceleration that matches your deck’s available cards, color needs, and ability to make the early tempo gain count.
