About Black Lotus

Black Lotus is a premium Black Lotus MTG proxy card from Magic: The Gathering‘s Limited Edition Beta set. This colorless artifact is one of Magic’s most iconic Power Nine cards and is most useful in old-school casual play, Vintage-style cube, display collections, and deck testing where proxies are allowed.

What Black Lotus Does

Black Lotus costs zero mana and can be tapped and sacrificed to add three mana of any one color. That makes it one of the most efficient burst-mana cards ever printed. It does not create long-term mana like a land or mana rock, but it can produce an explosive turn immediately.

In gameplay terms, Black Lotus turns one card into a major tempo advantage. It can help cast a commander ahead of schedule, power out a large spell, enable a combo turn, or let a deck use multiple spells before opponents have developed enough mana to respond. Subtle? Not especially. Effective? Unfortunately for everyone else, yes.

Best Uses for Black Lotus MTG Proxy

  • Vintage-style cube: Black Lotus is a signature power card for cubes that intentionally support broken starts and high-powered drafting.
  • Old-school casual games: It is useful for groups recreating early Magic experiences where Power Nine proxies are allowed.
  • Combo testing: The card helps test whether a strategy benefits from extreme burst mana.
  • Display collections: The Beta version has strong visual and historical appeal for proxy display binders.

Recommended Interactions

Black Lotus works well with fast combo cards, draw-sevens, recursion effects, and artifact synergies. Since it sacrifices itself, decks that can reuse artifacts from the graveyard can get extra value beyond the first burst of mana.

  • Yawgmoth’s Will: Lets you replay Black Lotus from the graveyard during a powerful combo turn.
  • Timetwister: Helps refill hands after fast mana empties your opening resources.
  • Underworld Breach: Can turn graveyard access and cheap artifacts into a larger combo sequence.
  • Emry, Lurker of the Loch: Gives artifact decks a way to reuse cheap artifacts from the graveyard.

Decks That Want Black Lotus

Black Lotus belongs in powered cubes, old-school casual decks, Vintage-style testing lists, artifact combo shells, and display collections. It is not a normal Commander card for sanctioned play, and most casual Commander groups should discuss Power Nine proxies before a game begins. Nobody enjoys discovering the social contract only after the turn-one disaster has already happened.

For deck testing, Black Lotus MTG proxy is useful when you want to test the feel of powered environments, compare fast-mana density, or build a display-friendly version of one of Magic’s most recognizable cards.

Strengths and Considerations

The main strength of Black Lotus is unmatched burst mana for zero mana. The main consideration is power level. Many casual tables do not want Power Nine gameplay unless everyone agrees first. Testing Black Lotus MTG proxy helps you use the card responsibly in cube, display, and casual environments where proxies are allowed.

Product Quality and Proxy Use

ProxyKing cards are produced with premium print quality, proper trading-card size, ideal weight, consistent thickness, and a natural shuffle feel for sleeved casual play.

This is a proxy/playtest card for casual play, Commander, cube, display, and deck testing where proxies are allowed. It is not an official Magic card and is not tournament legal. Review our Proxy Use Policy for responsible casual use.

Please review the definition for “proxy”. Cards sold on this website are representations of real MTG cards. You can purchase proxy cards for casual play. They are illegal in all tournament style formats. As long as you play in a casual setting, or in a group that allows proxy cards, you’re good to play with them.
