Ashnod’s Altar turns creatures into two colorless mana each without requiring the artifact to tap. That makes it useful in token decks, sacrifice strategies, and creature engines that need both a reliable sacrifice outlet and a way to fund additional plays.
Avenger of Zendikar can provide a large group of Plant tokens to convert into mana, while Ophiomancer can supply a Snake on each upkeep when you control none. Sacrificing an existing Snake allows a later upkeep to produce another, giving the Altar recurring material. The mana must still be used within the usual timing limits rather than stored indefinitely.
Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat add life swings whenever suitable creatures die, allowing the same sacrifice to produce both mana and pressure. Skullclamp can also draw cards when an equipped creature is sacrificed. Those interactions give a sacrifice deck several ways to turn a creature that would otherwise be removed or blocked into useful resources.
Color matters when evaluating loops. Reassembling Skeleton costs one generic and one black mana to return, so Ashnod’s two colorless mana cannot pay that activation by itself. Phyrexian Altar produces less mana per creature but can supply colors, which changes the combinations it supports. Ashnod’s Altar does nothing without creatures you can afford to sacrifice, so maintain enough token makers, recursion, or expendable bodies. Its strength comes from combining those resources with meaningful death triggers and a plan for the mana.
