Underground Mortuary combines black-green mana with a small amount of card selection when it enters. The land always enters tapped, then its surveil trigger lets you inspect the top card of the library and either keep it there or put it into the graveyard. That can improve the next draw while helping a graveyard strategy stock useful resources.
Its Swamp Forest types make it accessible through appropriate fetch lands, including Verdant Catacombs. Finding it before your next untap can make the tapped entry easier to accommodate while still giving you the surveil decision. A card placed in the graveyard may become useful through recursion, but only put it there when the deck has a reason to prefer that destination over drawing it.
For graveyard and creature-value strategies, the practical benefit is choosing between spells such as Life from the Loam and Assassin’s Trophy as the turn develops. Green development and black recursion support a long resource game. Life from the Loam can maintain land drops, while Eternal Witness recovers a useful spell once the deck has established enough mana to cast it again. A flexible source supports those decisions without requiring a separate fixing artifact to stay on the battlefield.
Unlike Overgrown Tomb, this land offers no life-payment option to enter untapped. It remains nonbasic despite its types, so searches restricted to basic land cards cannot find it. Surveil is selection rather than drawing an extra card. Include it when a manageable tempo cost buys useful fixing and control over the next draw, rather than filling the opening hand with too many tapped sources.
