Birds of Paradise combines early acceleration with flexible color fixing. A single green mana buys a flying creature that can later tap for one mana of any color, helping multicolor Commander decks move from an early green source into the rest of their spells.
It is particularly useful when your opening turns need different colors: Birds can help cast a two-color commander, hold up off-color interaction, or supply a missing color for a larger spell. Unlike a land or an ordinary noncreature mana rock, it normally cannot use its tap ability on the turn it enters unless it has haste. Plan for the acceleration to begin on a later turn.
Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy makes each activation produce an additional mana of the color Birds generated, turning a small mana creature into a more substantial source. Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss offers a different payoff by giving creatures with mana abilities +2/+2. Birds becomes a 2/3 flyer, and Raggadragga’s attack trigger can untap it after it attacks, letting it contribute to combat and mana production in the same turn.
The creature type of the permanent is both an advantage and a vulnerability. Creature-based draw and support effects can reward including Birds, but sweepers and small damage effects can remove your mana source. Llanowar Elves fills a similar acceleration role when you only need green; Birds is especially attractive when access to several colors matters. Keep sufficient lands in the deck so losing a mana creature does not leave your opening hand unable to function.
