Swords to Plowshares gives white decks a one-mana answer to a creature at instant speed. Exiling the target handles indestructible creatures and prevents ordinary graveyard recursion from immediately bringing them back, making it useful against both large attackers and small creatures that support dangerous engines.
The creature’s controller gains life equal to its power, but that is often a reasonable price for removing a threat that would otherwise take over the game. Exiling an opposing Archon of Cruelty before it attacks can prevent another triggered ability, while removing a sacrifice engine may break up a larger sequence. An entry trigger that has already happened will still resolve independently of its source.
Swords complements broader white sweepers such as Farewell by covering individual problems early and leaving the expensive reset available for a developed board. Esper Sentinel also fits the same efficient white plan, letting you establish a source of cards while preserving enough mana for interaction. The low cost helps creature and Equipment decks protect their tempo without abandoning their own development.
Targeting restrictions still matter. Hexproof, shroud, or protection from white can make a creature unavailable, and opponents can respond by protecting or sacrificing it. You can target your own creature if gaining life is the best available play, though giving up that creature is a real cost. Prioritize the creature whose removal changes the game rather than automatically choosing the largest body on the battlefield.
