Fierce Guardianship lets a blue Commander deck develop its board while keeping an answer to a dangerous noncreature spell. It normally costs three mana, but you may cast it without paying that mana cost while you control a commander. That makes it valuable when your game plan requires tapping out to advance.
Its best uses include protecting a combo, stopping a sweeper, or defending an important permanent from a removal spell. An opposing Cyclonic Rift remains a noncreature spell when overloaded, so Guardianship can counter it. A creature spell or a creature’s entry trigger needs a different answer; Guardianship does not cover either one.
Talrand, Sky Summoner offers a direct synergy: casting Guardianship while Talrand is in play can cost no mana and creates a Drake from Talrand’s cast trigger. Mizzix of the Izmagnus provides another suitable home, since a spellslinger deck often needs to protect a turn involving several spells. Controlling the commander enables the free option even when that commander’s other abilities are not relevant.
The condition checks when you cast Guardianship. Once you have legally cast it for no mana, removing your commander does not retroactively make you pay three. You still cannot counter an uncounterable spell such as Dovin’s Veto, and additional costs can apply even when the mana cost is waived. Include interaction that functions before your commander arrives as well. Guardianship is strongest as support for a commander you can deploy and keep active, rather than as your deck’s entire defensive plan.
