Force of Will lets blue decks protect a critical turn without leaving mana untapped. Its alternative cost asks you to pay one life and exile another blue card from your hand, giving you access to a counterspell when spending five mana would be impossible or disruptive.
Unlike narrower protection spells, Force can target creature and noncreature spells alike. It can stop a dangerous creature before its entry ability ever triggers or defend your own spell against opposing interaction. It does not counter activated or triggered abilities, and an effect that says a spell cannot be countered still applies.
The alternative payment trades cards for tempo. You spend Force plus the exiled blue card to answer one spell, making draw engines such as Rhystic Study and The One Ring useful partners for rebuilding your hand. A deck with only a handful of blue cards may also find that the alternative cost is unavailable when needed. Consider the number of blue cards you can reasonably keep in hand, not just whether your commander includes blue.
Fierce Guardianship offers a different form of protection when a commander is active, but covers only noncreature spells. Force can operate before your commander arrives and against a wider range of spells, with the extra-card payment as its tradeoff. Later in the game, paying its normal mana cost avoids exiling a card. Save the alternative payment for exchanges where stopping the spell matters more than preserving hand size, particularly when a game-winning play or an irreplaceable permanent is at stake.
