Card rulings 1
  1. Swan Song can target a spell that can't be countered. That spell won't be countered when Swan Song resolves, but its controller will get a Bird token.

Updated

Swan Song gives blue decks a one-mana answer to an enchantment, instant, or sorcery spell. That narrow cost makes it especially useful when you need to protect a key turn without setting aside several mana for interaction.

It can stop a removal spell aimed at your commander, counter a board wipe, or prevent an important enchantment such as Smothering Tithe from resolving. It also answers an overloaded Cyclonic Rift, since Rift remains an instant regardless of how its cost is paid. Swan Song cannot counter a creature, planeswalker, or a plain artifact spell, so it works best alongside interaction with broader coverage.

The controller of the countered spell receives a 2/2 flying Bird, which is often a manageable exchange when the original spell threatened much more. It can still matter against low life totals or when protecting a planeswalker. In a Talrand, Sky Summoner deck, casting Swan Song also produces your own flying Drake through Talrand’s trigger, helping an interaction-heavy strategy keep adding pressure.

Combo decks can use the low mana cost to defend a critical spell while keeping resources available for the rest of the sequence. Force of Will covers a wider range of spells, while Swan Song preserves extra cards in your hand by asking for mana instead of an alternate exile payment. Neither counters triggered or activated abilities. Decide whether the spell on the stack is worth the card and the opposing Bird, and save broader answers for threats outside Swan Song’s coverage.
