The Black Gate gives a black mana base an optional untapped entry and a way to help a creature get through a leading opponent's defenses. You may pay three life as it enters to avoid the tapped entry. Its activated ability then chooses a player with the most life, or tied for most life, and prevents that player's creatures from blocking a targeted creature for the turn.
Commanders with combat-damage rewards can use the land to improve the chance of a productive hit. Equipment carriers also appreciate a route through a developed blocking board, especially when a Sword trigger or another damage-based payoff matters more than the creature's raw power. The ability supports a single creature rather than making the whole army evasive.
The life-total condition restricts which player you can choose. If you alone have the highest life total, choosing yourself does not create a useful opening against an opponent's blockers. Reassess the life totals before activating instead of assuming the land can always clear the player you want to attack. The creature also needs to be a legal target for the ability.
As a legendary Gate, it has additional deck-building interactions but is not a basic Swamp. Paying three life for untapped mana can be worthwhile when it enables an important spell, while a slower turn may favor preserving the life. Include it when the targeted combat access is useful often enough to justify those entry and targeting constraints.
