Roiling Vortex keeps life totals moving downward and makes spells cast without spending mana costly. It deals one damage to each player during that player's upkeep, and a spell cast with no mana spent causes five damage to its caster. Red aggressive decks can use those pressures to discourage free interaction and keep opponents within finishing range.
The trigger checks mana actually spent, not the spell's printed mana cost. A normally expensive spell cast for free can qualify, while a spell using an alternative cost that still requires mana may not. Copied spells are not cast, so creating a spell copy does not by itself trigger the Vortex. Additional costs involving actual mana can also affect whether the condition is met.
Paying one red mana prevents opponents from gaining life for the rest of the turn. The ability does not prevent your own life gain, though the upkeep damage affects you as well as everyone else. Two mana makes the enchantment easy to establish early, but its symmetrical spell punishment needs consideration if your own deck uses free casts. Pair it with a low-curve attack or burn plan that can capitalize on shrinking life totals. The Vortex is most effective when opponents cannot simply wait indefinitely, and when its life-gain restriction helps ensure the damage you deal remains meaningful.
